As I was driving over to our church to teach a bible fellowship class for high school students, I was meditating on the phrase "Carpe Diem," which you may already know means "To seize the day." A popular Latin phrase which embodies the concept of taking control of your life by living mindfully throughout an entire day. "Whew", I thought to myself! "A day is a long time to try and seize." Just think of all the decisions and choices that we make throughout an entire day. No wonder we can feel so mentally and emotionally exhausted by the end of the day.
But I can handle a moment of time, I reasoned, at least one second at a time. Then, it just made sense to me that if I string the moments along one after the other, that the entire day would then take care of itself. Have you ever tried to think of one positive thought and one negative thought simultaneously at the same time? Pretty difficult if not impossible. So, I decided to choose and focus on the positive side. But, then, "How do I live each moment in the best possible way?" I asked myself. And then my thoughts rested on Jesus and what he taught us. When the Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious leaders of Jesus' time, asked Jesus what is the greatest commandment of the law to live by(Matthew 22:36-40), Jesus responded:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
That's it! Imagine what the world might look like if we all consciously considered the thoughts and well-being of others before making our choices and decisions on how to act! When I got to the class, I asked the class to get out their phones and Google a Latin phrase for "Seize the moment in love." We put together the phrase, "Carpe Momentum in Affectus." Discovering that there we many words in the Latin language for love, I decided to just make the meaning perfectly clear by putting the word love in English. Thus, "Carpe Momentum in Love."
The more you learn of God's love for you, the more you are able to grow in your own ability to be comfortable and like yourself. The more you grow to be comfortable with yourself and who you are, the more capable and free you will be to love others. So go, live out this day not focused on yourself. Rather,
"Carpe Momentum in Love"
You may be pleasantly surprised by how your day goes. To the degree you are able to take your focus off yourself and place it outwards towards others through love, you will discover the ability to live out your day with peace and joy inside despite whatever circumstances arise around you.
Have a blessed day...
